Campus Networking

A campus network is an exclusive local area network (LAN) or collection of linked LANs used by a business, government body, academic institution, or other comparable establishment. Within this perspective, a typical campus consists of a collection of adjacent buildings. Although end users in a campus network are often not as spread as they would be in a wide area network (WAN), they may be more widely distributed geographically than in a single LAN.
Campus networks at colleges and universities link the administration buildings, housing halls, lecture halls, libraries, student centers, sports facilities, and other structures located in a particular town or area. Key departments and staff personnel are housed in buildings connected by corporate campus networks. Within a constrained geographic area, the corporate campus network serves as the user-facing portion of the wider corporate network.

In an ideal campus network, every node is connected to every other node over optical fiber media, utilizing Gigabit Ethernet or 10-Gigabit Ethernet technology. In certain settings, such as university student centers or libraries, where multiple users concurrently utilize portable and mobile devices such notebook and tablet computers for research and communication, Wi-Fi hot spots or even a hot zone include the user end of the network.
